INRAE is recruiting a PhD candidate at the Joint Research Unit Molecular Virology and Immunology (Jouy-en-Josas, France) for a three-year doctoral research program. This position, within the Protein Macro-Assemblies and Prion Diseases team, focuses on the detection, identification, and characterization of Scandinavian Chronic Wasting Disease prion strains that emerged in 2016 and differ from North American variants. Working in a BSL-3 laboratory environment and collaborating with European surveillance networks, you will contribute to essential research aimed at developing rapid and sensitive detection tools for European cervid surveillance, understanding strain-specific susceptibility patterns, and assessing the potential for cross-species transmission to other ruminants, particularly livestock, including evaluation of zoonotic potential.
Work Environment
INRAE is a world-leading research institution in agricultural and food sciences, ranking 11th globally in ecology and environment. You will join the Protein Macro-Assemblies and Prion Diseases team, an internationally leading group that has specialized in transmissible spongiform encephalopathies since the late 1990s, employing diverse approaches from ex vivo studies to molecular biophysics.
You will be required to work in a level 3 biological safety environment to handle prion pathogens, requiring rigor and organization.
Position requirements:
- Holder of a Master’s degree (Master 2)
- Knowledge of protein biochemistry, molecular biology, and experience in cell culture would be appreciated
- Experience working in a bio-safety laboratory would also be appreciated
